The most common time when people look for contractors is when they buy or sell a home!

Begin, BE BOLD and
venture to be wise

01

You’re not ordering a cup of coffee to go. While Website ratings are helpful, you really need to do your homework before hiring a contractor.

Ask around. Many of your acquaintances have recently remodeled. Needless to say, you must contact several references. Yes, it’s time consuming. But the time you spend up front may save thousands, and priceless time and frustration, later. A good contractor should be able to provide you with referrals from past clients that you can call.

02

When a contract is presented, it should spell out the proposed work, payment terms and completion time. Be detailed. Misunderstandings are the most common cause of contract disputes.

This stage is the most important. You really need to have in writing exactly what your contractor is doing for what price. You should also have in writing what materials are being used and talk about what is going to happen in the event that the project needs change. Communication is key but HAVE IT IN WRITING!

03

Of course, your budget is a major factor – everyone wants the most bang for their buck.

Although it may be tempting to focus on minimizing cost, a better approach is to maximize value and optimize cost. When carrying out any project, avoid awarding the job blindly to the contractor with the lowest price. Remember a home improvement project will be with you for years to come.
